The good fight: women discover the transformative power of boxing
Posted June 02, 2019 14:20:22
Boxing is one of the most male-dominated sports, but for the past couple of years a small group of women from the Wallaga Lake Koori Village on the NSW far south coast have been meeting weekly to put on the gloves and spar with boxing teacher Amanda Hicks.
Many of the women are survivors of domestic violence and saw the classes as a way to empower themselves. Along the way, they’ve built the motivation to take charge of their own health and well-being, build self-confidence and inspire their families.
The weekly training session is funded through the Dead or Deadly program run by Waminda, an Aboriginal women’s health and welfare service on the NSW south coast.
