Man drowns while swimming with his wife and family at Paynesville in Victoria's east

A man has drowned at Paynesville in Victoria’s east this afternoon.

- Four men drowned in three separate incidents between Christmas Eve and Boxing Day
A Victoria Police spokesman said the 45-year-old man from Bairnsdale was swimming with his wife and family in waters off Sunset Drive at about 4:30pm.
At around 4:50pm people noticed he was in difficulty and he was pulled from the water, the police spokesman said.
Attempts were made to resuscitate the man but he died at the scene.
Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
The man’s death is the sixth drowning in Victorian waters in the space of a week.
“If we are going to take anything away from these deaths, and we should take something away from them, it’s just have them in them back of your mind, whether you are going to the beach, going to inland waterways, just think about the people that have died,” he said.
On Saturday, a 34-year-old woman drowned while attempting to save her child, who was swimming in Lake Victoria, near Bairnsdale.
On Christmas Day, a 64-year-old man drowned while diving at Cape Schanck on the Mornington Peninsula.
